Between Two Trees
A Collaborative Zine
A thesis project by Jewel Miller
About
Between Two Trees is a collaborative zine created by Jewel Miller as part of her senior capstone project at Arcadia University. It aims to compile a diverse selection of artwork and writing from contributors all over the country in different walks of life and situations. Between Two Trees, the title of this project, can mean many things—from deep connections with nature to the trials and tribulations that come with transition, or being stuck in the midst of one thing and another—this zine allows us the space to stop and breathe between this moment and the next.
Contributors
Fern Manetta (he/she): an Arcadia graduate and occasionally a writer online.
Ryland McGinniss (he/him): a transmasculine and bisexual writer with Cerebral Palsy. He is also the founder of a literary magazine for disabled creatives called The Machine, and is a student at Arcadia University. His work has been published previously in Kindergarten Mag, and in Moonstone Art Center's Haiku and New Voices Anthologies. His most prized possession is his extensive concert t-shirt collection!
Alecia Miller (she/her): a mixed media artist from Eastern PA. Creating mixed media artwork allows her to play with texture in her pieces, and to build up layers of meanings and ideas as part of her creative process. Her love of words is expressed through incorporating old book pages in the collage layers, expressly chosen for the stories they are from or the words they contain, giving new life to these forgotten tomes. You can find more information about her work at Aleciamiller.com.
Ven Mubarak, (they/them): a sophomore English Creative Writing major with a minor in Theater Arts. They love fiction (especially fantasy) and poetry and are well-acquainted with the wave of late night inspiration.
Julianna Reidell (she/her): a Junior English and French major at Arcadia University. Her work won Gold and Silver medals in the national Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition during high school; her humor piece “Love with Romeo and Juliet: A Parody” was featured in the Scholastic publication Best Teen Writing of 2019. Her work can be found in two Moonstone Press anthologies, Cathartic Youth Literary Magazine, and former issues of Arcadia's undergraduate litmag, Quiddity.
Allison Schmidt (she/her): a Media and Communication major with a public relations concentration. She loves cats, books, art, music, and traveling. Her favorite place to be is the ocean and her favorite thing to do is read. When she isn't reading, she's hanging out with her friends or drinking coffee.
Shannon Staiber (she/her): Shannon is, at heart, a nature lover. Always inspired by the beauty of nature and the natural world she tries to capture the true feelings of nature with her work.
Justin Steerman (he/him): From attention-grabbing posters to engaging social media graphics, Justin has successfully translated concepts into designs that resonate with audiences. Eager for new challenges, this young designer is ready to make their mark in the visual communication world.
Haylie Belle (she/her): a fiction and poetry writer who focuses mainly on the retelling of antique stories and motifs in her work. Her work has been previously published in Quiddity Literary Magazine and Penned Literary Magazine.
Grace Clark (she/her): a senior illustration major at Arcadia. She is a traditional artist who primarily works with watercolors and loves creating cozy paintings of animals and nature.
Anna Curtis (she/her): an environmental health sciences student at UNC Chapel Hill, WXYC radio DJ, artist/printmaker, former rock climber, and casual tree-enjoyer.
Justice Cressley (they/them): a 26 year old poet and craftsperson, weaving and dodging through forests of trees as they search for one to rest under.
Corin DeStefano (he/him): a first-year student at Arcadia University, majoring in Studio Art & Art Education. He is very passionate about the art community, working in the Spruance Gallery, while also being very involved in the drama department, acting in the Fall '23 Murder Mystery Play, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Cabaret Romance Show at Arcadia. He enjoys spending time with friends and family (including his 11 pets at home), time at the gym, and time playing video games or music.
Ryan Hiemenz (he/him): a writer from Doylestown, Pa. who enjoys listening to all kinds of music, catching movies at local theaters, and hot coffee.
Sydney Howse (she/her): a senior English Major with a concentration in Creative Writing and a minor in History. She writes both fiction and non-fiction, but really enjoys all things fantastical, especially dragons. When not writing, she can be found reading, crocheting, or watching Supernatural.
Erin MacIver (she/her) (@eem_studios): an artist, illustrator and designer based in Pennsylvania. Erin’s journey began in her childhood, often crafting in a multitude of mediums. An ever-present thread running through all her artwork is the combination of traditional hand done work with dynamic graphic elements. Erin is a fan of infusing child-like elements and touches into her work to make it joyful and exciting for herself and her audience. Erin believes embracing one’s childlike energy can provide a comforting positivity that brings about happiness.
Carly Maloney, (she/her): a senior English major with a Business Administration minor. She enjoys multiple forms of visual art such as drawing, painting, and photography.
